Tips for avoiding outdoor allergens

You can't eliminate outdoor allergens. But you can take steps to reduce your exposure to outdoor allergy triggers and to help manage your outdoor allergy symptoms.

Take action against your outdoor allergy symptoms:

  • Track the pollen count in your area and, if possible, stay indoors on days when pollen counts are high
  • Schedule outdoor activities for later in the day (pollen counts are highest during early mornings, between 5:00 am and 10:00 am)
  • Use air conditioning in your home and car instead of keeping windows open
  • Wash your hair and clothes to remove pollen after spending time outside
  • Wear a particle mask and sunglasses when outdoors
  • Don't line dry clothing outside
  • Use a saline spray solution to clear pollen from the inside of your nose

Flowers, grasses, and trees: what to embrace and what to avoid

Keeping plants that produce a lot of pollen away from your home and bedroom windows is a smart idea for outdoor allergy sufferers. Certain trees, flowers, and plants are more "outdoor allergy friendly" than others.
