Tips for avoiding indoor allergens

It's nearly impossible to eliminate every allergen from your home. But you can take action to minimize your exposure to allergens and empower yourself against allergy symptoms. And that can mean less time spent with itchy, watery eyes, a runny nose, and sneezing.

Take action against your indoor allergies

Here are a few steps you can follow:

  • Use an air filter to help clean pet dander out of the air in your home
  • Encase your mattress and pillows in special allergen-proof covers to create a barrier between you and dust mites
  • Run a dehumidifier to eliminate moisture in damp areas such as the basement. Reducing moisture will help prevent the spread of mold spores
  • Choose hard floor surfaces like wood, tile, or vinyl that can be easily cleaned. If carpeting is a must, select low-pile carpets or rugs that can be washed
  • Use shades or washable curtains instead of heavy drapes or venetian blinds, which are dust collectors
  • Keep pets outside if possible, or limit them to certain rooms. Keep them off your bed

Year-round allergies need year-round “spring cleaning”

Daily cleaning can reduce troublesome allergens around the house. Here are some cleaning tips to help control unwanted houseguests:

  • Wash bedding in hot water (130°F or higher) once a week to kill dust mites
  • If you have curtains, wash them regularly
  • Clean moist areas like shower curtains, refrigerators, and basements, where mold likes to grow
  • Vacuum often with a vacuum designed to trap dust particles

It's also a good idea to wear a particle mask while cleaning. Better yet, get out of the house while someone else cleans!
